PUMPKIN PATCH
We recently had a family trip to a local pumpkin patch where we were able to enjoy a hayride, a maze, apple cider donuts and kettle corn.
Hello, we are Kathryn and Will! Thank you for choosing to read more about our family of three, Kathryn, Will and our son, Benjamin (plus our dog Ellie!).
We met in college in North Carolina when we were assigned to the same group project in a chemistry class and became instantly interested in each other. Not long after we began dating, Will left for Nicaragua, where he served in the Peace Corps for two years. During this time, we communicated mostly through phone calls, letters and the occasional rendezvous in Nicaragua. Our long-distance letters and phone calls helped us to strengthen our amazing friendship and hone the communication skills that our relationship is built upon.
In 2010, after four years of dating, we were married in an apple orchard in the mountains of North Carolina. Shortly after getting married, while at a church retreat, we felt God calling us to adopt. Our feelings were confirmed even more so after enduring a high-risk pregnancy with our son, Ben. We are so excited to begin our adoption journey and to complete our family through open adoption.
When I first met Will, I was instantly taken by his sense of humor. Though many people think of him as a man of few words, he has a knack for perfect timing and comedic effect. Ever since the beginning of our relationship, he has been able to make me laugh in any situation, even when things haven’t gone as planned. His ability to bring lighthearted humor to trying circumstances is part of what makes him such an amazing person and life partner.
Will is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand; a loyal friend, he maintains strong relationships and always stands by his family. As father, Will is involved and engaged. He loves working with his hands and is always sure to include Ben on his DIY projects. It’s not usual to see the two of them working together to bring one of Ben’s many ideas to life. Will’s playful nature is one of his best qualities when it comes to parenting; he is always first to join in on the fun of building sandcastles or swimming in the ocean.
As a National Park Ranger, Will oversees and develops park programming such as guided nature walks and educational performances for children. We frequently visit the park as a family and enjoy attending youth performances and hiking on the trails. I know he looks forward to sharing his love of the outdoors with another child.
Kathryn is the ultimate planner and ensures vacations, weekends, daily tasks and meal times are full of fun and excitement. Even when our family schedule is full, she makes time for the little things, like playing board games or building with Ben. Though she exudes kindness and compassion, she also loves a friendly competition! She and Ben love to play on the same team to try and beat me at whatever game we are playing. I know they will love to have another teammate on their side!
Early on in our relationship, Kathryn impressed me with her dedication to family; she spent a lot of time with my family during my service in the Peace Corps. It meant so much to me that she attended my family’s dinners and get-togethers even though I wasn’t there. This proved to me just how much value Kathryn puts on family relationships, a quality that I believe makes her a wonderful mother and leader of our family.
Not only is Kathryn dedicated to our family, but she has also devoted her career to helping countless families and children across the nation through her work at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Her selfless passion for others in need is one of her most wonderful qualities and makes her the ideal role model for Ben.
Our son, Benjamin, was born in 2014. Full of curiosity and imagination, he loves space and pirates. He is athletic and participates in tae kwon do and swimming and is always looking for new sports to try out. Will supports Ben’s love for sports and play by helping to coach his baseball team and serving as the leader for Ben’s Boy Scout den. On the weekends, Ben loves to play outside and frequently requests we go fishing or hiking as a family. When the weather gets dreary, Ben and his canine companion, Ellie, enjoy snuggling up together in a blanket fort.
Ben is very social and loves making new friends. He gets his “funny-bone” from his father and enjoys making people laugh by thinking up new jokes.
We talk about adoption often with Ben and he cannot wait to be a big brother! He has saved his toys to share with the baby and dreams of taking a younger sibling swimming and on visits to the park. Whenever he is around a baby, he loves to play peek and boo to try to make them smile. We know he will be such a great brother and will love helping to care for this child.
We continued our yearly tradition of vacationing with friends by visiting Emerald Isle, North Carolina for a week in July.
While there we enjoyed time playing on the beach and in the sand. All the kids took turns burying Will in the sand.
Ben enjoyed playing with our friends' daughter.
We took a boat trip to see dolphins and wild horses.
When we weren't at the beach, we all hung out together in the house for some downtime.
We finished the week celebrating the 4th of July with fireworks on the beach.
We recently had a three day snow storm which meant lots of family time sledding and enjoying walks in the snow!
Last weekend, we had an unseasonably warm December day with the temperature in the 60s. We spent the day hiking in a nearby National Park.
Ben attends a forest class at this National Park where he goes hiking every week. He proudly showed us this tree that his class walks over during their hikes.
Even our dog Ellie joined our hike.
We spent Thanksgiving with Kathryn's family at a beach house in North Carolina.
The weather was beautiful and the kids (and Will) were able to swim.
Will even taught the kids how to bodyboard.
We also decorated cookies, visited a historical fort, went fishing and make Thanksgiving necklaces.
While the older kids fished, Kathryn painted her youngest niece's nails.
We enjoyed watching so many wonderful sunsets!

We live in Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. in Will’s childhood home. We love our large wooded backyard where we often see deer, chipmunks and birds. Our afternoons are spent reading in hammocks or lounging on our screened-in porch, while nights are spent by the fire pit making s’mores. The inside of our home features an open living area that is perfect for entertaining our friends and family.
Our neighborhood is within walking distance to the community center, library and town square, where our town hosts events throughout the year. We especially love the “Holiday Stroll” in December and the outdoor concerts in the summer. Just one block away is a large wooded park where our family plays tennis, baseball, basketball and spends time on the playground.
Living outside of Washington D.C. we feel we have the best of both worlds; access to a big city and also the small-town feel of our community. We love raising a family in such a diverse and cultured area. This child (alongside big brother Ben) will have many opportunities to learn about and respect different viewpoints. In our community, we enjoy visiting museums and monuments or hiking and playing at one of the many nearby parks.
Though we both grew up close to where we live now, our family extends across many states, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Connecticut and Alabama. Both sets of grandparents’ have adventure-friendly homes (one a lake house and one a mountain home) that provide endless activities for the whole family. When we can’t visit in person, we like to stay connected through frequent video chats and calls.
During the holidays, we gather around the kitchen table for meals and games with our extended family. We enjoy making memories with our many aunts, uncle and cousins by experiencing new and unique activities together (most recently, we tried our hands at ax-throwing!).
Our family extends beyond those that are our relatives and includes many amazing friends who we have become close with. Our supportive church community comes together for monthly dinners and plans annual excursions to the beach! This child will grow up in a tight-knit community of friends and family who cannot wait to shower them with love.
Our family loves to travel! In addition to his experience in the Peace Corps, Will spent his childhood living in five different countries. Kathryn’s love of travel blossomed during her college years when she studied in Paris and visited many cities throughout Europe. Each year, we plan a trip to one of America’s National Parks or head overseas to explore a new country. We have a special place in our hearts for all things Disney and enjoy visiting Disney World and hopping aboard Disney cruises. We cannot wait to share the magic of Disney with another child.
Whether we are traveling or spending time at home, we love being outdoors, hiking, fishing or biking. Summertime brings picnics at outdoor concerts and time spent at the pool. During the colder months, we visit museums, go to the movie theater or have a home movie night.
We strive to raise generous, caring children who love God and believe that it’s important for children to be involved in church from a young age. Our church is a special place where children can learn about God’s love and build relationships with friends with similar values. We both serve as deacons for our church and are involved in volunteer programs including the children’s nursery and a mother’s group.
Other Family Traditions:
Although we cannot imagine the emotions you are experiencing, we respect your courage in choosing the path of adoption. We want you to know that we think you are incredibly strong and brave, and we will ensure that your child knows this too.
If chosen as an adoptive family, we promise to raise this child in a household where they feel loved and supported, no matter what. Being a fun-loving family, we find joy in doing even the small things together and we can’t wait to share that joy with a baby. We hope that when this baby looks back on their childhood, they remember a time full of laughter, love and open honesty about their adoption placement.
This profile is only a small picture of our lives. We welcome any questions you have and would love to get to know you better. Our heart’s desire is to welcome this baby to our family through open adoption and provide them endless love and support. Our prayers are with you, and we look forward to meeting you and building a relationship with you.
